Fraud Scams Are Everywhere – Warning from local RCMP.

April 28, 2012 at 2:58 pm | Blog

Ridge Meadows RCMP join all police forces around the world to warn citizens about the different fraud scams that are out there.  With the prevalence of the Internet, fraudsters are busy trying to fool you out of your hard earned money.  Here are two more recent examples of Maple Ridge residents who have been contacted by fraud artists and thieves:

A Maple Ridge senior was contacted by a man claiming to be an employee of a company that will monitor older citizens, and those with disabilities.  Being a recent subscriber to the company the man claimed to represent, the senior gave out some valuable personal information.  The next day the senior’s home was broken into and her purse was stolen.  When the company was contacted it revealed that they do not make calls of this nature to their subscribers, and that the caller was not an employee.

Another recent scam has a citizen receiving a personal cheque for close to $4000.00.  The company wanted the recipient to be a mystery shopper, and to contact the company with a phone number that was provided to activate the cheque.  This citizen was able to do some quick research and found out the legitimate phone number for the company was different than the one provided.  The citizen then contacted that company who advised that a large number of Canadians had received the same cheque and correspondence, and that this company did not authorize such a campaign.

Superintendent Dave Walsh said, “There is certainly a criminal element out there that will stop at nothing to get your money or valuable possessions.  A good portion of these fraud artists are very convincing, and make it hard to question their validity.  The best piece of advice is to question everything you’re not sure of.  Be very cautious when replying to a phone solicitor who has called you, and never give out any personal information to anyone you don’t know.  Remember, if something seems to good to be true, it usually is.”

For more information on how to prevent frauds, please go to Frauds and Scams under Protecting Yourself on the ‘E’ Division web page (http://bc.rcmp.ca)

Anyone with any information in regards to any of these, or other, crimes is asked to contact Ridge Meadows RCMP at PH# 604 463-6251.  If you wish to remain anonymous call CRIME STOPPERS at 1 800 222-8477 or leave a TIP online at www.bccrimestoppers.com.  Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of up to $2000.00 if your information leads to an arrest and conviction.

Traffic Services and Youth Resource Officers ‘team up’ – this is great!

April 18, 2012 at 4:17 pm | Blog

Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Youth Resource Officers and Traffic Services teamed up to make our roads safe.  The traffic officers issued a total of 108 violation tickets on Friday April 13 and Saturday April 14, 2012 on a variety of Motor Vehicle Act infractions.  They concentrated on the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes on the Lougheed Highway during rush hour traffic in both the morning and afternoon, along with construction areas.

The Youth Resource Officers maintain watch for safe driving in and around all of our local schools.  Parents and commuters quite often get delayed with parents dropping off or picking up children at school, making it unsafe for our younger citizens.  In addition to this, the Youth Resource Officers are watching high school students who have driving restrictions due to being ‘New’ drivers, to make sure they’re not carrying more than one passenger, and they have the appropriate ‘N’ sticker on their vehicle.
